my best friend is an artist
My friend is very gifted but could not pusrsue her career as an artist due to some shitheads that would not let her into Art School. Now she'll be a doctor. I love this picture since it was able to capture the moment in a way a camera would not have been able to. The colors seem surreal, but they however fit the image perfectly creating a joyful atmosphere. The eye first moves from the red bicycle to the body of the little girl, then to her head, following her eyes, wanting to see what he is laughing about. When I look at this composition I question myself what this setting was, I know however that she used a photograph to paint this picture.
Lab 3 number 2
Here is my second poster for lab 3, although I think it fits better as a book cover. Either way, I chose the black and red contrast again, combining it with gray and another contrasting color, yellow. Angekommen means "arrived" and indicates the long journey of the woman behind the facade. I like the contrast of the diagonal with the horizontal and vertical lines. The horizontal breaks the lines and disturbs the flow of lines.
the face
I found that picture on a photo site where people can just upload their images and have it evaluate it by others. The idea behind it is genius. I think all he did was using two different layers to create this effect ( he did change the background as well). I like the overlapping of facial parts with is knuckles, that really creates a surreal feeling. The contrast the background brings with a silver-like glow to it works very well with the black T-shirt.The only thing that bothers me are the lips. Due to the gap in between the hands, they make the lip seem a little deformed especially since the mouth's ends point downward, wheras in realty they'd be at least level or maybe even pointing slightly upwards. Having the lightest point of this picture behind his head really draws attention to the face since the contrast is big there with the black hair. I would love to do something like that one day!
it's a sad world
Two different girls, two different worlds, and yet the same sad atmosphere it creates. The first picture was taken in a white Thai minority village in northern Vietnam, the other picture was taken near the Cheung Ek killing fields near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The sadness of both pictures strikes me. Both girls are living in poverty, brand marked by their history. Sometimes we just don't realize how lucky we are to live in an industrialized country, where our only concern is what to wear the next day. Imagine somebody not having the choice what to wear cause their only clothes is the clothes they wear, sometimes only a t-shirt, if they're lucky they'll have shoes. On my trips to numerous countries I have seen many children, usually happy and always smiling, even in India, the poorest kids welcomed me with a smile, curiosity on their faces. Not these two kids. I will never forget the sadness in their eyes and it will remind me on how lucky I am.
gulli
I found this picture on a site for photography. It reminded me of what I love about photography, to capture the unseen. People walk over this gulli everyday, but no one seems to see the beauty in it. I like the way the lines run through the pictures and the white line breaking the black line. It would be quite a boring picture without the white line. An A is formed by the line breaks, this would be a great picture for the alphabet soup, too bad it's not mine. I just want to show that minimalistic photos can still be genius and expressive.
Lab 3
dandelion clock
One day I got sick of studying and grabbed my camera to head out and take some pictures of the sun setting. The pictures were taken in Wernigerode, Germany, right by the Harz Mountains. I love this first picture with the warm colors it creates, the sun setting right behind the left clock, almost blinding through the clock right into the viewer's eye. Surprisingly the second picture was also taken that evening. I noticed the superiority of the big clock in the left forefront, almost like a leader. It stands out clearly catching the viewer's eye. I like how focussed the "leader" is, leaving the background blurry.
Yellow
I really like to take pictures of random things, trash, or flotsam. I find it really interesting to capture something that one usually doesn't find worthy to perceive. I usually look out for things that give me enough contrast and color to set themselves apart from the background and that give the picture some tension. All the above pictures have been taken in New York, where I would go on walkabouts every weekend to discover the unseen. I developed an appreciation for the odd, old, rustic, colorful and strange. I particular like the rope picture and the gully since both pics offer an extreme color contrast. People sometimes think that I am weird, kneeling down in front of a bunch of trash, but I can find a lot of beauty in it. To me, the simplest pictures can be the most powerful.
Lab 2
Lab 1
At first, I did not put much thought into this composition. After a little while i decided to plan my layout and what I want to have in it, so I made a preselection of available photos (all fragments used in this collage originate from pictures taken by me). I do like the color composition, although I am not quite sure if that rainbow at the bottom works too well.
The story to this picture is: There are these two extremes, one is just work, the other is being a slacker, symbolized by the fart balloon. This guy is in between trying to figure out the right way to go. Along the way you have to overcome obstacles in order to make the right decision.
